The Nobel prize was awarded to two scientists Robert Ornstein and Roger Spery for their research in the early 1980's. In a nutshell, their research showed that the human brain has two halves responsible for different functions. The left half of the brain was called the left brain, and the right half was called the right brain. The left brain is responsible for words, logic, mathematics, order, experiment, while the right brain is responsible for creativity, humour, pictures, colours, music and rhythm.
Imagine a football match being played. The Players of one team are using only their left eye and left leg. The other team are using both eyes and both legs. What may be the difference between the two teams? Ten times, a hundred times or maybe a thousand times? It can be even more.
Similarly when both sides of the brain are used more, the total ability increases tremendously. This increase is much greater than the ability you get by simply adding the abilities of the right brain and the left brain.
Think about a group of friends who have decided to go on a trip. When this was announced, part of this group jumped with joy. They discussed where they would be going - what they would do and how they would eat, drink and sing. They shouted "let's go today or tomorrow". These are the right brain dominant people.
The other part of the same group became silent. They started thinking. They wrote the places to be visited, noted all that needed to be taken. They thought about the resources they had and the obstacles that need to be overcome. Then they said, let's decide on a date once we get everything organized. They are the left brain dominant people.
Some in this group reacted in both ways and came out with very creative ideas and suggestions. Both the right and left brains are well developed in this group. Successful learners, brilliant students have both the right and the left brain well developed. They are equally good at everything.
Workout your Brain Dominance
You can now workout your brain dominance by thinking about the way you behave in a situation. Once you know which side is more dominant, all what you need is to develop the other side a little more.
In order to do this, do the activities given below. If you think your right and left brain are both equally developed, then select activities you have not done, and do them now.
If you think you are more Right Brain Dominant
- Arrange your photos in an order
- Make a personal budget
- Find how a car or any other motor works
- Arrange your books in some order
- Analyze a current problem
If you think you are more Left Brain Dominant
- Create a new dish and enjoy it
- Walk along a road you have never walked before for ten minutes without any particular reason.
- Listen to a song or music you enjoy, whenever you like
- Imagine the feelings of a pet dog or cat
- Play with a child, the way the child loves.
- Create a personal letterhead with a logo
- Use colour pictures, stories in your daily work as much as possible.
Your brain, your mind and your abilities are unique to you. Discover this uniqueness. Use this uniqueness for your success. Think about other abilities you can develop. Make an effort to develop them. Live each day out of a whole mind.
