ICASL Educational Trust awards 25 student scholarships

The ICASL Educational Trust awarded scholarships to twenty five registered students of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka at its annual Scholarship Awards ceremony held recently at Hotel Renuka, Colombo.

The chief guest at this function was Mr Joe Mutupulle, an eminent senior member of the accounting fraternity of Sri Lanka and senior partner of Joe Mutupulle & Co. Under the Trust's scholarship scheme, a monthly payment of Rs 3,500/- is made to each student for a period of one year. During ten consecutive years, the Trust has awarded nearly 200 scholarships to registered students of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka to facilitate their professional studies.

A large number of scholarship recipients have qualified as Chartered Accountants over the decade.
The ICASL Educational Trust was created in 1997 by the late Mr Michael Brito-Muthunayagam, one of the outstanding accounting luminaries of Sri Lanka. It was set up for the benefit of members and registered students of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. The award of scholarships and prizes is one of the main objectives of the Trust. The trustees are Messrs. M N G C Perera, N R Gajendran and D S W Andradi.

The Founder of the Trust, the late Mr Michael Brito-Muthunayagam was born in 1934. He had his education at Royal College and St Joseph's College, Colombo. He qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and subsequently became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka in 1964. He was an elected Council member of the Institute from 1991 up to the time of his demise in July 1997.

The twenty five scholarship recipients for 2008 are : K N K Rathnasekera, K G A S T Kosgoda, W R Chandana, Ms W D N P Walisinghe, Ms R H S Sandakalum, Ms G Kumudini, Ms N R Jayasiri, Ms K M T S Perera, Ms D N N Samarathunga, W M L P Bandara, Ms L G Wedage, Ms A W A T M Abeysekera, Ms M A L Wathsala, M A M Mujeeb, D Wannigama, Ms E M T M Wijewickreme, A W A P S Abeysekera, Ms K M R U Karunarathne, M Pragalathan, Ms T Suntharam, N Thamilchelvan, P G A M C Jayarathna, A Antony, Ms S Vidanagamage, and H P D S Dharmapriya.
