BRI talent show to showcase hidden youth talents

‘Bhagya Rangakala Institute’ a dancing, music and theatre academy holds it third successful concert on Sunday, December 21 at 6.30 pm in Negombo Town hall auditorium and at the Trinity College Hall, Kandy. at 6.30 pm on December 28.

With dance, music, harmony singing and theatrical performances, 'Bhagya in Concert' showcases the talents of more than 150 pupils from different ages ranging from 4 years to 60 years.

Started in 2006, BRI is well-known for its award winning performance at a number of recognized competitions such as the Annual Competition Festival of Sri Lanka Festival for the Performing Arts affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festival for Music, Dance and Speech UK and Sri Lanka Festival of Music, Dance and Speech.

Among the awards it won, the BRI choir became the Best Choir in 2007 and 2008 at Sri Lanka Festival for the Performing Arts affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festival for Music, Dance and Speech UK Annual Competition Festival and its Senior Dancing Troop won Gold medal at Sri Lanka Festival of Music, Dance and Speech in 2007 while the junior team won the same in 2008.

BRI is a joint effort by musician and singer Ian Anuradha Jayasinghe and musician and choreographer Ms. Vasana Prasangika Thalgahagoda, the co-founders of the institute.

The academy trains children for singing, playing musical instruments like piano, organ and guitar and dancing with variety of styles like Kandyan, Bharatha, free-styles and social dancing.

In addition BRI choir shares their harmonious singing in churches and other functions while its dancing troop is well known for their performance in popular TV and other open air shows.

One of the founders, Ian is a talented musician and he developed his singing under Rev. Fr. Claver Perera and Mr. Francis de Almeida. Having learnt upcountry, low-country and Bharatha, Vasana Prasangika turned to music as a pianist under Ms. Virginia Fernando and Ms. Qurera.

She had done choreography for a number of TV shows including 'Rangadhara' on TNL and 'Manohari' in Rupavahini which were produced by internationally awarded TV programmer producer, Ravindra Munasinghe. Vasana has now turned to film choreography. Another dancing instructor Ms. Bhashini Herath is also playing a key role in the success story of BRI.
