Fashion Design

"FASHION is about glamour, glitter and experimental outfits! Fashion is also very hard work and lots of studying!! At the Academy of Design (AOD), Colombo's leading Fashion design School, Fashion is not considered a hobby but a serious education discipline... The undergraduate Fashion Design program at AOD provides students with the intellectual, conceptual, and technical skills that enable them to be professional fashion designers"

What is Fashion? FASHION is often synonymous with the catwalk, makeup, big hair, glamour, glittering show-biz parties, chunky shoes, and experimental outfits. But, in reality, fashion is a mirror of its culture and world view. In all its beauty, fashion is a form of artistic expression; an international language.
Simply stated, fashion has no national boundaries. It is a potent declaration of how one sees and represents oneself. The fashion industry is a complex, multi billion - dollar business encompassing design, production, distribution and retailing. Fashion is the fourth largest industry in the world. Fashion Design is much more than the crafting of beautiful clothing.

At AOD, our aspiring designers are encouraged to look beyond the traditional restrictions of fashion, to scrutinize clothing as it responds to lifestyle, sculptural performance, movement, costume and art. Students learn how to develop a fashion collection from concept to the finished product. Exposure to a complete range of technical skills in model drawing, pattern drafting, draping, colour illustration, textile design and accessory design are introduced. The curriculum also includes computer assisted design, aesthetics, the theory of composition and colour, fashion history and a variety of other design related subjects.

Fashion studies would be incomplete without solid knowledge in the marketing, merchandising, and business management of clothing and accessories. Students are taught how to interpret theoretical knowledge to infer various trends that affect the global industry, to employ visual and theoretical research and analysis skills to identify 0he supply and demand fads, and to explore strategies for merchandising and marketing apparel.

Students at AOD, conclude their studies with a professional runway show highlighting the designs created by them, during the Annual Fashion Show. Students plan and produce all aspects of the garments for the final show, from inspiration to final execution. Each year, the fashion show receives applause from a very large and distinguished audience. The academy held its annual graduation fashion show this year, on the 28th of August. Pictures of the show are highlighted in this article.

Interior Design

Interior Designers create environments within various types of spaces; offices, health care, institutional, hospitality, retail and residential space. . Interior Designers are problem solvers. They identify opportunities presented by specific spaces and intended functions. Interior Designers develop solutions that enhance the quality, usefulness and indeed the beauty of living spaces.

The programme focuses on the intellectual and personal exploration of each student and instills the skills necessary to become an imaginative and creative designer. The department stresses abstract and practical design solutions incorporating cultural, social and environmental issues with the use of technology and hands-on experiences. The approach to design would be the determination and classification of all designing stages, from the creative ideas to the final product, while highlighting the intellectual process that encompasses researchers, ideas and the routes of human sight
The scope of work in interior has expanded tremendously.

As the built environment of the present day has grown in complexity and diversity, the realm of the interior has become a profession in its own right. While an interior designer works alongside other consultants such as architects, engineers and construction managers, in many cases today projects are handled independently by a new breed of professional: interior designers (interior architects), these are creative professionals who do not only plan and design public, commercial, recreational, institutional and domestic buildings but are also responsible for and qualified in the management of the implementation of such projects.
