Valuable items stolen from late journalist’s house

Less than 10 days after the death of The Sunday Times journalist Roshan Peiris, unidentified men broke into her house and allegedly removed valuable items from the house, Police said. The house located at Flower Road, Colombo 7 was broken into on Friday morning and items worth up to Rs. 500,000 stolen, according to a complaint lodged by Mrs Peiris’s son Suren Peiris.

Cinnamon Gardens police OIC, Chief inspector Sagara Deepthipala said a separate investigation is being conducted to ascertain the items allegedly stolen from the house. He said there was also a dispute about the ownership of the house which prompted the police to seal the house.

“We sealed the house because two separate parties are claiming ownership of the house and prohibited them from entering the house for now. One party claims that the house belongs to him and that he has the legal documents to prove that, but a second person is also claiming ownership,” the OIC said.

Meanwhile the second claimant of the house has deployed his own security guards preventing any person entering the house which comprises of three apartments. The Chairman of Protect Property (pvt) Ltd Eraj Fernando who claimed security guards have been deployed to guard the place said he had been told by the second claimant to do so.
