Mobile industry seen rising to 9 mln phones

The entry of Malaysia’s largest mobile telephone operator, Maxis Communications Bhd., through its subsidiary Usha Tegas Sdn, into the local industry following India’s Airtel will see the mobile market expanding rapidly together with cut throat competition with the consumer ultimately being the winner.

“The industry is fiercely competitive but the consumers will be able to benchmark quality and the service standards,” Nushad Perera , Chief Marketing Officer Dialog Telecom Group told The Sunday Times FT.

Industry analysts say that the tough competition raised by the industry scale has been driving players to find more opportunities.

“Now with expanding the industrial scale and quickening the pace of innovation, the entire domestic mobile terminal industry needs to step into the world, seeking new markets, technologies, capital and other resources for more development space,” an industry analyst said.

He said that the current share of the pie will be expanding due to this reason. He noted that this tough competition raised by the industry scale has been driving players find more opportunities from innovation.

“There is room for nine million mobile phones in the market from the current seven million,” he added.
