Rain, rain till end of April

The heavy rain that has been experienced in most parts of the country during the past few days is being described as the latter part of Northeast monsoon activated by a low-level disturbance in the atmosphere, an official said yesterday.

Besides heavy rain, earth slips and flood situations could arise in several parts of the country, a duty forecaster at the Meteorological Department said.

She said heavy rain with thunder and lightning would continue for a few more days in the Eastern, Western and Southern provinces.

“This is the end of the Northeast monsoon and the inter-monsoon period is about to begin. The rainy season has begun and might continue till the end of April,” she said.

The official said Badulla, Bandarawela and Nuwara Eliya were among the main areas prone to earthslips but other parts of the hill country would also face the danger.
