Nabbed at Male for alleged drug smuggling

The two suspects

Two Sri Lankans were arrested by the Maldives Police on Thursday for allegedly attempting to smuggle in heroin to the islands, a Maldivian news website reported.

The couple had flown in to Islamabad, Pakistan from Sri Lanka and then reached Male’ via Dubai with four kilogrammes of heroin concealed in the false bottom of their bags, the website said quoting unidentified police sources.

Maldives Customs Service officers had caught Sameen Ummul Faumiyya (56) and Mohamed Wasood Bisthaami (38) at the Male’ International Airport in a special operation they had conducted.

The police who were informed had taken the two into custody along with the confiscated drugs, the website said. Meanwhile a Maldivian national has been arrested in connection with the smuggling.
