Teens need a good zzz ......

Getting enough sleep is especially important for growing teens. The US National Sleep Foundation says they need about nine and a quarter hours of sleep each night.

The Foundation offers these reasons for getting enough zzz's:

  • Lack of sleep can cause problems with learning, memory and concentration.
  • Without enough sleep, teens may be more susceptible to acne and other skin problems.
  • Fatigue can cause aggression and irritability toward others, which can cause problems with family, friends and relationships.
  • Lack of sleep can lead to overeating, and eating more unhealthy foods.
  • Fatigue can make teens more likely to use nicotine and caffeine to stay awake.
  • Tired teens may be more susceptible to illness.

Scared of shots?

Help your child get through vaccinations

Your child's vaccinations are necessary, but knowing that doesn't make it easier for a nervous youngster. The Nemours Foundation offers these suggestions at vaccination time:

  • Explain to your child that everyone has to have these shots to stay healthy.
  • Tell younger children that it's OK to cry, but they should try to be brave.
  • Stay calm and relaxed around your child.
  • As the vaccine is being administered, try singing a song together, talking or telling a joke. Give the child something else to focus on.
  • Once the vaccination is complete, praise your child and tell him or her how proud you are of their behaviour.
  • Treat your child to a fun activity or a present after leaving the doctor. Tell the child about it beforehand, to give the child something to look forward to after the shot.

Do you get menstrual cramps?

Cramps are a common symptom of a woman's monthly menstrual cycle. Some women can prepare their bodies for their period, which may help reduce cramps.

At least two weeks before the period begins, the University of Maryland Medical Center suggests:

  • Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, avoiding junk foods and high-fat foods. Get protein in the form of lean meats, fish and eggs
  • Getting extra omega-3 fatty acids by eating oily fish like salmon and tuna.
  • Reducing your salt intake.
  • Limiting caffeine, sugar and alcohol.
