Ananda crush hapless Bens

Ananda’s left arm leg spinner Malith Gunatilleke who had a match haul of 13 wickets for 95 runs, enabled them to crush St. Benedict’s by an innings and four runs in the Inter-School cricket match concluded at Ananda Mawatha yesterday.

Batting first St. Benedict’s were all out for 179 with Ananda’s left arm spinner Malith Gunatilleke (6 for70) and off spinner Udara Peiris (4 for 68) causing the damage. Gunatilleke in particular bowled extremely well on the turning wicket and the Bens found him unplayable. Gunatilleke so far has taken over 70 wickets for the season.

When Ananda batted Udara Jayasundare, Ranganath Wijetunga and Vishwa Wijesuriya chipped in with useful scores. But it was Dinesh Lokuge who caught the eye with a masterful 67.

So far Ananda has registered wins against Dharmasoka, St. Sebastian’s and Royal – beating all three teams by innings.

STC Present Boys win
S. Thomas’ Present Boys gained a close win over their Old Boys in their annual cricket encounter at Mt. Lavinia yesterday due to the bowling of J. Thahir who captured five wickets for 42 runs.

The present Thomians batting first scored 177 for 9 with T. Nugawela top scoring with 56. The others to swell the Thomian score were I.Dissanayake (23),S. Pussegolla 17 and R. Niroshan (20). M. Adams bowled best for the Old Boys taking three wickets.

The Old Thomians tried to make a game of it but the Present Thomians were smarter. They fielded and bowled better to turn the game in their favour and Thahir bowled his heart out to give them this win. After being 162 for 7 at lunch the Old Boys folded for 176 leaving the Present team winners by a solitary run.
