Sri Lanka rupees ‘convertible’ in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur – It’s not unusual to encash Sri Lankan rupees in the unofficial markets in many Asian countries, particularly Singapore or Thailand. But fancy exchanging local rupees at an official bank counter at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport!

A group of Sri Lankan journalists visiting Malaysia last week were pleasantly surprised to find the Sri Lanka rupee listed among various exchanges at a counter at the airport.

They quickly encashed the few rupees they had into Malaysian currency in addition to converting US dollars which was the original intention. The Sri Lanka rupee is not convertible overseas.
