Dushyanth - doing it his way

By Vidushi Seneviratne

Artistes go about creating names for themselves in numerous ways. But there's nothing that works better than being able to carve out your own niche in the minds of fans. And who better to illustrate this point than one of our well-known young local pop stars? In case you're still guessing, think King of Pop, groovy dance moves and some pretty catchy original tunes.

Never failing to impress his fans, and keeping them guessing as to what he is upto, Dushyanth Weeraman, continues to keep his versatile musical career very much alive. And performing at the Shanghai Asian Music Festival 2006 held in China recently, is one such exciting happening. Held from October 26-30, sixteen countries from the Asian region participated in the competition, sending in a total of 24 contestants. The venue for the vibrant event was the Shanghai Television Station, in Shanghai.

Having the privilege of representing Sri Lanka, Dushyanth explained that the selection process was based on the organisers inviting these chosen countries to participate, and the responsible authorities in each country nominating participants for the competition. "The competition is held under two categories which are Original and Cover. So once you get nominated by the authorities in your country, you need to send in an instrumental version as well as one with your vocals on it, of your chosen songs," he said. "Countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka and of course China participated," he said, adding that the entire process began about three months prior to the competition.

Performing a single titled "Jayththu Nonay," for the original category, Dushyanth was awarded 5th place, making quite an impression on those present.

Six judges from China as well as other parts of Asia, adjudicated at the competition. "You Are My Life," a single by Michael Jackson, from the 'Invincible' album, was his pick for the cover category. He felt the response for his original song was better than the response he received for the cover selection, especially because the original was so different and authentic. Dushyanth was awarded the impressive "Excellent New Singer Award," at the end of the competition.

A highlight of the event was the fact that following the competition, the first twelve participants were chosen for a public performance. "This was held at Nanching Road, a vast area which is used only by pedestrians and is primarily devoted to entertainment and commercial activities. There will be easily a hundred thousand people here, at any given moment!"

Coming in as sponsors, Thai Airways granted two free air tickets for himself and his team leader, Ranga Jagoda, working in the capacity of his manager.

As for future plans, having tried out the competition this year, this versatile artiste definitely wants to give it a shot next year as well.

"Now that I know what they look for and what standards you are required to meet, next year's competition will be definitely be a challenge." Other than that, keep your eyes and ears open for Dushyanth's new album all set to hit the market soon.
