Sheron Fernando the bright spark at the Ridgeways

The North-East Monsoon Meet over the week-end at the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo came pretty good despite the unkind weather. Four events were completed successfully with great scores recorded in each event.

Gold medal
The annual Gold Medal glittered with a stunning round by our prodigy, Mithun Perera in full control and in absolute style the chubby fella cracked smart 5 under par 66 to strike gold and massive applause. Sanjay Wettimuny came behind with 72.

Clifford cup
Shamal Perera made his first appearance to win a major event and a handsome trophy. His total of 138 strokes over 2 rounds was adequate to beat Sanjay Wettimuny and Amal Cabraal on 139 each. Jude Rayen scored 2 colourless centuries and smiled throughoutlunchtime on Sunday. Sumal Perera celebrations incessantly at the 19th through the mid-afternoon.

Sheron Fernando
Very much in the forefront with colourful successive rounds, Fernando had his handicap chopped to 3 and over the weekend his skills sharpened further to be delighted with success.

Centenary Trophy
Sheron Fernando had two excellent rounds of nett 69 and 65, and one not so excellent round of nett 73. His total of 207 was totally adequate to beat Manjula Chandrasoma and Shamal Perera on 213 each.

Sheron Fernando was unmatchable. His gross score 69 was the lowest, and his nett 65 was hard to beat. He collected the honours, celebrated like hell and laughed all the way home to relate the success of his life. Popular personality Sanjeewa Wickramanayake had a clever round of nett 69 to come behind.

Handicaps
Broad smiles of success spread over a few faces where handicaps were chopped. Those who happily benefited were Sheron from 4 to 3, Sanjeeva Wickremanayake from 7 to 6, Manjula Chandrasoma from 11 to 10, Roschen Perera 18 to 17 and Chandana de Silva 26 to 25.

Fine dining excels
The one redeeming feature and pleasant surprise has been the vast improvement to food and service at the Ridgeways. Fine dining has returned to fine dining, with bouquets to Rohan Fernando. The X’mas fare planned looks stunningly attractive.
