Nabbed for extortion

A person from Gampola was taken into custody by the Kandy Police Crimes Division for allegedly extorting money and cellular phones from students.

The arrest was made by Inspector Nandasena, Police Sergeant Tennakoon and Constable Karunaratne.

A number of complaints had been lodged by parents that their children had been waylaid and their money and other items systematically extorted.

On the instruction of Chief Inspector Nilupul Dehigama, the suspect Suresh Perera was taken into custody and was produced before Kandy Chief Magistrate Harsha Setunge, who remanded him till September 11.
