Court decision this week on Merbok
The Board of Investment (BOI) continues to provide
services to the controversial Malaysian MDF manufacturer Merbok
Lanka Ltd factory at Horana, which was the focus of a report in
The Sunday Times FT last week.
BOI officials say that they are hoping for a positive
ruling to the court case of which the hearing is on Wednesday, August
30. The company has won a temporary court injunction against BOI
plans to shut the plant due to non-payment of service dues.
The paper reported last week on the issue regarding
the ‘extraordinary’ subsidies that were awarded to this
company when they set up the factory in 2000, and protests from
local furniture manufacturers against depleted rubber-wood resources.
