Listening to some of our English TV News-readers, I was reminded of letters written to you by several gentlemen, about the atrocious pronunciation of these newsreaders.

Recently I heard the following gaffes. For 'ploughing' one person read out as 'plowing' rhyming with 'blowing'
For 'proprietor' he said 'propertier'
For 'perilous; he said 'perilious' rhyming with 'billous'
All the above were by an English News reader on the channel that prides itself on being the 1st with the news.
These mis-pronunciation make us a complete laughing stock. Isn't there anyone who knows proper English, to guide these newsreaders?
Then, one day a Govt. Minister referred to the postponement of Peace Negotiations in Geneva as follows: "therefore we have agreed to postpone the talks to 24th & 25th of May this month.." I am not making a mistake here, as I made it a point to listen to three different channels at three different times that telecast this item in their news bulletins.
And believe me or not, recently, at 9.30 pm, while the 'EYE Channel English news broadcast was on, the following strip news snippets were shown.
LTTE 'C-ar-d-e-r-s' and a little later it appeared as 'C-a-r-d-r-e-s'
LTTE 'T-i-g-h-e-r-s'
Hand 'G-r-a-n-g-e-s'

How come these glaring howlers are allowed on national TV? Is there no controlling or monitoring authority? Don't they have proof-readers like you get in newspaper offices?

However, all I can say is, these are a damning indictment on the standard of English of the English teachers appointed to our schools.
