Unravelling a ‘histry’

It’s a play with a wacky title that will leave the average English teacher in trauma. But title aside, the play is bound to stitch you up in gales of laughter... Heeeeeer’s Uh-Merry-Kar!

Uh-Merry-Kar! Histry is reconstructed…

Following is a preview of the play Uh-Merry-Kar! A compleat unabrijed account of the histry of the greatest nation on urrth! submitted by renowned theatre critic Feranu Mich. Having worked at such esteemed organisations as The Times of New York, The Washington Post and The Herald Tribune, Feranu Mich has reviewed many theatre productions and has been nominated for many journalistic awards.

(Editor’s note: We have researched Mr. Feranu Mich’s claims and are compelled to inform our readers that no journalist by that name exists. In fact, we strongly believe that the following preview was written by the actors of Uh-Merry-Kar! We, therefore, advise our readers to exercise maximum caution, when reading the following preview and to place little faith in the conclusions drawn herein.)

It was a dark and stormy night when I sat down to watch a preview of the play Uh-Merry-Kar! The location of the preview cannot be disclosed to my readers for security reasons. The play begins with a lovely collage of images to the American national anthem, and then gives us an introduction to the play and the people behind it. Some words of advice to future presidents of the US and then a blackout.

Performing a compleat histry of Uh-Merry-Kar would require actors to traverse through 53,000 years of histry, a multitude of characters and situations and wade through years of political subterfuge and centrifuge! Yet, the three stars of Stage-fright&Panic’s production, Michael, Anu and Feroze skip through the years with the gay frivolity one would normally associate with a Rodgers and Hammerstein production! The audience (of which I was the sole member) was treated to an amazing display of character acting, as the awesome threesome took us (me) to Amerigo Vespucci’s humble map-shop on the Spanish dockyards, and then brought us to the moment when Amerigo first set foot on the New World! A bunch of lilting lullabies followed, and then they gave us the song of the first English settlement sung by a world-famous country and western singing duo! The audience (me) was treated to a fantastic display of thespian magnificence as Anu, Michael and Feroze then switched rapidly from Franklin, to Jefferson, to Madison and to Washington as they brought to life the story of the Bill of Rights, and showed us the humaneness that pervaded the Founding Fathers as they gave life to a new-born nation!

Uh-Merry-Kar! is a play that not only tells the world the histry of a great nation; it tells you the truth behind histry. Revelations about the First World War and the Second leave the audience gasping. The actors also give us some valuable lessons that they have learnt from Uh-Merry-Kar, and a quiz show, an interactive audience segment, several songs, a special message all add to a climactic finale! After which the actors proceed to do something that will leave everyone amazed! In all, after performing for approximately two hours, 29 minutes and 69 seconds the actors rounded off a scintillating performance with a curtain call song that just about underlined their sheer unbridled talent!
Uh-Merry-Kar! is a play never to be missed. Never again on a Sri Lankan stage will we see a collection of such fine talent, blending in unique harmony, bringing together melodious voices, bone crunching action and a jaw dropping finale! After seeing this play you will never see Uh-Merry-Kar in the same light. You will know many, many things that you never knew before, and you will get answers to many, many questions that you had about Uh-Merry-Kar (but were obviously afraid to ask).

What exactly was the Gettysburg address? Did the moonwalk happen? How did Pocahontas die? What role did a playful Platypus play in the First World War? Did the same bullet that killed Lincoln come back to kill Kennedy? Who was the mystery lady, who linked Hitler and Roosevelt? Who was the brave black woman, who sparked off the civil rights movement? Answers to these questions and much more…
