Cherished memories

The students of the Yolande Abeywira School of Speech and Drama presented Rag Dolls, Tomahawks And A Silver Slipper at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on June 1, 2, 3 and 4, 2006.

There were 180 students whose ages ranged from 7 to 14, who participated in this performance, which was produced and directed by Samantha Abeywira De Soysa of the Yolande Abeywira School of Speech and Drama.

It was a very entertaining evening as the show catered to all ages. The drama kept the attention of both kids and adults with its witty comments and light comedy. Peter Pan, the first of three performances, was played by a younger cast.

Wendy (Tanisha Wijesinghe) together with Peter (Dane Joshua) gave quite a performance and Wendy and Peter’s journey to Neverland with a jealous Tinkabell (Renata Offen), Red Indians and mermaids was a treat to watch. Captain Hook (Quraish Fazleabas) managed to catch everyone’s attention with his brutal looking pirates.

The Little Princess (Sashenka Lakshmanasingha) and the students of Minchins Academy displayed their singing and dancing skills, while Miss Minchin (Keyshia de Soysa) was every bit what one would expect of the scheming Miss Minchin. The costumes were beautifully colour co-ordinated, and the choreography was good in this segment. The last performance was none other than the all-time favourite Cinderella. Cinderella (Danica Fonseka) and her stepsisters Bella (Chalukya Weerakoon) and Donna (Vimukthi Caldera) were nothing but a treat to watch. The stepmother’s (Dinuka Hettiaratchy) performance kept everyone in fits of laughter. Prince Charming (Janith Rupesinghe) displayed his singing and dancing skills amidst cheers from the audience.

The music and choreography were under the guidance of Soundarie David and Oosha Saravanamuttu. It was a night to cherish.
