Mystery figures in popular accounts teacher's death
By Asif Fuard
The Kandana Police are investigating whether this week's gruesome killing of a popular tuition teacher was linked to a car-jacking or personal grudge.

The 57-year-old popular A/L Accounts teacher, Premadasa Welimanne, was stabbed to death by his assailants while he was asleep at his Pio Mawatha residence in Kandana on Tuesday night. Kandana Inspector O. Abeysekara said there were 32 stab injuries on the chest and the right shoulder. "The killers had covered the body with a bed sheet and placed two pillows on it before they had fled in the victim's Toyota Corolla car bearing the number plate WP HQ 7596. Apart from the car, nothing has been taken away", the inspector said.

No arrests have been made so far.
The day before the incident, Mr. Welimanne had planned to spend the Poya holiday with his friend Mahendra Jayasekera and his family at the Negombo Palm Beach hotel.

On Poya Day morning, Mr. Jayasekera waited for his friend for a long time. Since Mr. Welimanne was a person who was known for his punctuality, Mr. Jayasekera telephoned his friend. But there was no answer.

Mr. Jayasekera in his statement said he then went to Mr. Welimanne's house and noticed the car was missing but the gate was locked. He said he jumped over the wall and saw the kitchen door was open. He entered his friend's room and saw blood on the floor. On the bed was found the badly mutilated body of his friend -- covered with a bed sheet and two pillows. Mr. Jayasekera then called the police.

Premachandra Welimane, the victim's youngest brother said his brother lived all by himself at home after his divorce. "My brother has no known enemies. The last time he spoke to me he told me about his kidney problems," he said.
