Schoolboy allegedly assaulted by teachers
Three schoolteachers including an Assistant Principal of the Bulathsinhala Madya Maha Vidyalaya who had allegedly assaulted a sixteen-year-old school boy last week have been arrested, police said.

They said Balawedage Sahan Tharaka who was admitted to the Government Hospital last Tuesday is reported to have been attacked because he is alleged to have broken the side mirror of a teacher's motorcycle and is now afraid to go to school due to fear of further punishment.

Bulathsinhala Inspector Pragathi said the suspects were produced in courts and were released on Rs. 5000 surety bail. In another human rights related incident the Wariyapola Police are charged for allegedly assaulting a twenty-six-year-old Roshan Jayaweera, a timber sawyer who resides at Welawa.

On July 15 three officers of the Wariyapola Police station had allegedly beaten Mr. Jayaweera using a number of techniques including a belt. When Mr. Jayaweera had come to the same station to make a complaint to Wariyapola Inspector Nimal Rowel, the officer had allegedly ignored him. Police Constable 9687 Premaratne had been indentified as one of the alleged perpetrators.

Mr. Jayaweera was later admitted to ward 35 of the Kurunegala General Hospital where he underwent treatment for two days. While in hospital both the Kurunegala Police and a Judicial Medical Officer heard his complaint. However, no action has yet been taken by the police.
