Radio Sports on SLBC
Breaking new grounds in the field of sports, a new programme on sports called “Sports Radio” commenced last week over City FM radio of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

The prime force behind “Radio Sport” Bandula Saman Wathuregama- a veteran Sports Journalist at SLBC said the programme running for two and half hours, in all three languages, starting from 5.00pm every day will include analytical programmes and will provide a good platform to discuss pressing issues in the field, deviating from the traditional sports commenting.

“ Sports is not given its due place in the electronic media, especially on radio. There are no depth studies and sport comments often tend to be monotonous”, Mr. Wathuregama observed.

In trying to overcome the dullness and the drab comments made by commentators at times, he said, Sports radio will include a programme called “ Back Page” where they will focus on one sports article on each paper and go in to an in-depth analysis involving the writer. “When the writer himself is commenting on the articles, it will convince the listener better”.

The team, though comprised of veteran in the field, will keep its doors open for the new comers and especially school children, who will be given a chance to try their hands at sports Journalism, he said.

He said more emphasis will be given for on the spot reporting and on tours abroad- an area where we have been lagging behind. “ Even countries like Bagladesh have steady team of commentators every time its sports team go abroad. But, it’s a shame we cannot afford to do so”.

Kelum Srimal, Sports Commentator, said they hope to spend the 2 _ hours time in productive but in a simple manner. He said apart from sports news it will broadcast other news as well given its importance and would especially focus on songs related to sports. - Poorna Rodrigo
