Customs officers seek more security, GoldQuest denies charges
Customs officers unions will meet tomorrow and demand more security for them following an attempted gun attack on one of their officials who is conducting investigations into the GoldQuest referral market scheme.

Union secretary and Customs superintendent Uditha Jayasinghe said they had informed the Customs Chief of their security concerns and would be seeking additional security for officers handling sensitive investigations such as the GoldQuest probe.

Customs Superintendent Athula Lankadeva said he believed his investigation into the GoldQuest was the reason behind the attempted gun attack on him on Thursday night outside his residence.

A gunman with two accomplices reportedly tried to shoot Mr. Lankadeva as he was about to enter his house, but he managed to take cover and escape. (See full details in Financial Times Page 1.)

Meanwhile the GoldQuest International in Hong Kong in a statement last night said:

"GoldQuest International is deeply distressed by a concerted campaign that has been launched initially through certain sections of the media about the network marketing operation, which is being operated successfully in several countries. While GoldQuest has sought to deal with this matter with patience and propriety through lawyers, given the references made with respect to this by officials of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, GoldQuest is deeply shocked and concerned with the turn this campaign has taken.

"An incident of an alleged attack on a Customs Officer has been reported in the media, alleging and implicating that such attack has been at the behest of GoldQuest. GoldQuest categorically rejects such allegation and or implication and reiterates that GoldQuest does not engage in such despicable acts.

"GoldQuest earnestly appeals to the Sri Lanka Police Authorities to speedily conduct investigations to identify the culprits and those who may have instigated them.

"GoldQuest also urges the Sri Lanka Police Authorities to investigate the beginnings of this campaign to tarnish its name, repute and standing through media reports, as there may be links between persons who may have initiated such campaign and those linked to the alleged incident."
