Indo-Lanka FTA model for South Asia

By Quintus Perera
The Indo-Lanka Free Trade Agreement is a model for other countries to follow in setting up similar agreements within the South Asian region, said S. Sen, Deputy Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Sri Lanka has benefited more than India under the deal as the island was exporting more to India than what India imported from Sri Lanka, he told a news conference to mark the 'Made In India Show' held last week.

A South Asia free trade zone could be created by creating similar free trade pacts.

Trade between India and Sri Lanka has reached the billion dollar mark under the Indo-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement.

Tilak de Zoysa, Chairman, Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, said that the availability of Indian products under the FTA gave Sri Lankan consumers access to cheaper products.

A classic example is that motorcycles of Japanese origin manufactured in India could be bought at around Rs. 100,000 compared to the price of Rs. 140,000 if they were imported from Japan.

While quality, design and other features are identical to the Japanese product, if they were imported from India there would be a vast price difference, de Zoysa said.
Over 100 Indian companies, such as Bharat Earth Movers, Godrej & Boyce, Indian Oil Corporation, Kirloskar Electric Co and TATA International Ltd, displayed their wares and services at the "Made in India" exhibition at the BMICH.

The objective of the event is to increase bilateral trade between India and Sri Lanka and to promote joint ventures and investment in Sri Lanka.

The show promoted exports of Indian capital goods and services to Sri Lanka through the $100 million Indian line of credit.

The CII was looking for new areas of investment such as agriculture, energy efficient industries and environmental management.

Among the products displayed were agricultural machinery, construction equipment, pharmaceuticals, food processing machinery, processed/frozen foods, healthcare products, hotel equipment, soaps and detergents, machinery for the gem industry, petroleum and petroleum products, iron and steel products and machine tools.

CSE to open branch in Kandy

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) will open its second branch office in Kandy on Wednesday, as part of the CSE's expansion strategy and to promote stock trading among the masses.

Six stockbrokers have initially expressed interest and will be the first to offer services from Kandy. The key ingredient of the services would be the online order execution which would now be closely accessed by those in Kandy and other surrounding areas like Kurunegala and Matale.

The branch office will be housed at the Bank of Ceylon building "Ceybank House" in Dalada Veediya. The CSE expects an immediate, daily turnover around Rs. 4 million from the Kandy office and is hopeful that this number would grow. The CSE will also be carrying out roadshows and other programmes to encourage a wider participation of the public.

The next probable location according to officials would be a branch in the North once communication facilities improve.

Currently there are only 1,500 to 2,000 total clients among the stock brokering firms and both member firms and the CSE are looking at ways of increasing the number.

The six participating brokers for the Kandy operation are Asia Securities (Pvt) Ltd, HNB Stock Brokers (Pvt) Ltd, Bartleet Mallory Stock Brokers (Pvt) Ltd, MMBL Phillip Securities Ltd, DP Global Securities (Pvt) Ltd, and SC Securities (Pvt) Ltd. (AA)
