Aravinda,Kumar blast NCC to Premier League title

By Marlon Fernandopulle
Contrasting Half centuries from Aravinda de Silva and Kumar Sangakkara guided NCC to a comfortable 44 run victory over Tamil Union in the Premier Inter Club Limited over final at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds yesteday.

Batting first NCC hit up an imposing 278 for 8 wickets in 50 overs and dismissed Tamil Union for 234 runs in the 46 th over to clinch the Limited over Championship Title.

It was a 153 run second wicket stand between Aravinda de Silva(65) and Kumar Sangakkara(98) that set the stage for the imposing NCC total. After the early departure of opener Pradeep Hewage,Kumar Sangakkara joined Aravinda de Silva who opened the batting with an intention of performing the role of a pinch hitter.

The 36 year old De Silva struggled to find his touch initially and looked completely out of sorts as he battled in the centre. The usual flair and flambuoyance that De Silva is renowned for was missing as his strokes lacked in timing and placement.

In contrast, Sangakkara looked in fine fettle as he accumilated runs freely and whistled to a run a ball 50 in double quick time.De Silva however tackled champion off spinner Muralitharan successfully hoisting him for a six over mid wicket and collecting a couple of boundaries off the spinner. He reached his 50 in 80 balls but was far from the De Silva the cricketing world had known. He was finally out at 65 but not before adding 153 runs for the 2 nd wicket with Sangakkara that set the stage for a match winning NCC total.

Sangakkara completed a fluent 98 off just 94 balls with two sixes and seven boundaries as NCC finished on 278/8 in 50 overs.

Needing to score over five and a half runs per over Tamil Union lost opener Indika Galagoda in the fourth ball of the innings and struggled to recover from there on.Their top order failed to give them the required start as they lost their first five wickets with only 91 runs on the board.

Upul Chandan(43) and Malintha Gajanayake(26) added 49 runs for the sixth wicket to steady the ship before both batsman departed within 14 runs to leave Tamil Union tottering at154 for7 wickets.Chandana was needlessly run out at the non strikers end after a smart piece of fielding by Ruwan Kalpage while Pushpakumara picked up Gajanayake.

Skipper Niroshan Bandaratilake(36) and Anil Riddegammanagedara(31 n o) made a valiant attempt towards the end but the effort was insufficient for Tamil Union as they were bowled out for 234 runs.

Liyanage and Jinnen steers Police into final

By Bruce Maurice
A match winning, unfinished stand of 136 for the sixth wicket between Chaminda Liyanage (57 n.o) and Rasmi Jinnen (68 n.o) steered Police SC into the final of the Champions Trophy when they defeated Badureliya CC by five wickets at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Taking first lease of the wicket, Badureliya were soon into trouble. when they lost three wickets with only 28 runs on the board. But an 81 run stand for the fourth wicket between T. Kodikara and S. Silva gave them a blood transfusion and S. Abeygunasekera weighed in with an useful 44 runs to give them an useful score of 217 to defend.

When Police took lease of the wicket, Badureliya soon had them on a roll at 82 and five of their batsmen back in the pavillion.

But then came the heroes of the day, Liyanage and Jinnen. After the feel of bat onto ball, both threw caution to the winds and Police SC made it for tomorrow's final with 5 wickets and 2.4 overs to spare.

Sampras and Capriati struggle through

MELBOURNE, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Pete Sampras edged a tense and dramatic five-set match against Nicolas Escude in the early hours of Sunday morning to reach the Australian Open fourth round. The eighth-seeded American's 7-6 5-7 6-4 6-7 6-3 victory set up an explosive clash with ninth seed Marat Safin for a place in the quarter-finals. Women's top seed Jennifer Capriati was also pushed to the limit as she needed three sets to beat powerful Greek Eleni Daniilidou. The world number one and defending champion looked far from comfortable in her 6-2 3-6 6-1 win. Fourth seed Kim Clijsters had no such problems, though, ruthlessly ending wildcard Cindy Watson's dreams 6-1 6-2 at Melbourne Park, while the only problems Safin had were with officials.

Black caps power to thrilling victory

Brisbane, January 19, (Reuter) Big-hitting Chris Cairns (102*) has lifted New Zealand to a thrilling four wicket victory over South Africa in the teams' VB Series match here in Brisbane yesterday. The win, which arrived with only five deliveries to spare, was found on a brilliant exhibition of strokemaking from Cairns which extricated the Black Caps from peril at a mark of 5/98 at one stage.

Chasing South Africa's tally of 241, the New Zealanders' chase began disastrously as Mark Richardson (0) perished from just the second ball of the innings and as further wickets tumbled through the middle stages.

Earlier in the day, their renowned fighting qualities had also been in evidence again as they pegged the Proteas back when a huge total had looked in prospect. Five South African wickets crashed for the addition of just 10 runs at the conclusion of the innings as they stuttered toward their eventual score. Their late collapse ultimately proved extremely costly.

South Africa lost their last five wickets for 10 runs to score 241 from 48.3 overs.

New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond bounced back from some early punishment at the hands of Jacques Kallis to take four wickets for 37 runs from 9.3 overs.

Wicketkeeper Mark Boucher (51) added 74 for the fifth wicket with Jonty Rhodes (44) after Kallis had hit a blazing 65 from 68 balls and shared a second-wicket partnership of 115 with opener Gary Kirsten (43).

Kallis played some superb off-drives, reaching his 50 from 49 balls including seven boundaries.

The talented all-rounder, who missed Tuesday's win over New Zealand because of an ankle injury, hit Bond for four boundaries through cover in the sixth over of Saturday's match.

His free-scoring innings was the perfect response after Herschelle Gibbs was bowled from the first ball of the match by left-armer James Franklin.

Kallis and Kirsten then rebuilt the innings before Kirsten was caught and bowled by Chris Harris (1-45) in the 22nd over at 115 for two.

Weather demons hit U-19 World Cup opener

All the hard work by ground staff, all the fondest hopes of organisers came to next to nothing when the opening game of the ICC Under-19 World Cup was abandoned after just on 20 overs at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, at Lincoln University near Christchurch today.

Rain, the blight of New Zealand's summer this season, caused a delay in the start and had the final say when setting in later in the day.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand were meeting in a game already affected by rain and after 19.5 overs, Sri Lanka, who chose to bat first were 85/2 with Sumalka Perera 37 not out and Jeevan Mendis 13 not out.

It was a surprising move by the Sri Lankans to bat first on a pitch expected to provide some spite after having been under covers for so long.

However, it was the Sri Lankans who were slightly on top when the abandonment came. They had come back from losing a wicket in their first over, courtesy of a fine piece of reflex catching.

Point fieldsman Peter Borren was unable to hold a well-struck drive from Upul Tharanga. He grasped the ball only for it to slip from his hand. Fortunately, for him, the ball went up in the air for long enough to allow Stephen Murdoch coming across from gully to get his hands beneath the ball before it hit the grass.

Opener Perera then added 50 runs in 68 balls in partnership with Kanchana Gunawardene before the latter offered a chance to Ross Taylor, fielding at a wide slip held a regulation catch.

Vice-captain Mendis then joined Perera and after playing through some tighter bowling from Borren and Michael Bates, they were starting to open out a little, especially Perera, when the rain forced the teams from the field.

Bates was the pick of the New Zealand attack. His left-arm medium-fast deliveries conceded only 11 runs from his six overs.
