  • Madonna furious

Material mom Madonna is fuming at daughter Lourdes' father after his recent arrest for smoking marijuana in a New York City park. Carlos Leon, 33, was busted in Manhattan's Washington Square Park after undercover cops saw him puffing on a joint. He spent the night in jail and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor the next morning.

But worse than facing the judge was facing Madonna, who lit into him about setting a good example for their child, 4. "Madonna tore into him over the phone, and you didn't want to be around her after- ward," a source confides. "Everyone who was near her was walking on eggshells - she was steaming ! She yelled so loud everyone could hear her screech: 'If you want to be a father to Lourdes, you better clean up your act, fast !'":

Even though Madonna, 43, is now married and has a babv son, Rocco, with British movie director Guy Ritchie, 32, she makes a point ot letting little Lourdes spend plenty of time with her personal trainer dad. But despite her provocative public persona, which is on display in her sold-out, Drowned world concert tour, insiders say the superstar is a devotee of healthy living who is vehemently opposed to drug use. "Madonna treats her body like a temple," says the source. "She does yoga, exercises constantly and follows a very strict diet. She hates drugs. She's never used them and doesn't let people who use them get anywhere near her or her kids. "That's why she's furious with Carlos' arrest. he should know better."

Madonna wasn't the only one shocked by Leon's rash behaviour. "It's hard to believe someone who knows New York and is media savvy would get caught in Washington Square Park with dope," says a veteran Big Apple cop. "It's a place we target. It's known as a hangout for pot smokers and drug dealers, and it's no secret that we go in there regularly and make arrests. "You'd have to be prettv stupid to light up a joint in the middle of the afternoon. We even have cameras monitoring the park around the clock."

And while insiders say Leon will get off pretty lightly for his offence, Madonna will come down much harder on him than the legal system. "Madonna wants Lourdes to grow up knowing her dad, and she likes to see them spend quality time together," the source adds. "In July, Carlos even taught Lourdes how to ride a bike, and he made sure she knew all the safety rules - but now this happens.

    Janet Jackson wants a baby

    - And her mom is hopping mad

Message to Janet Jackson - your mother is very unhappy about your plan to become a single mother. During a recent interview with Larry King, newly single Janet admitted that she's thinking of having a baby. She told Larry, "It has definitely crossed my mind." The 35-year-old diva also told an insider that a little baby would make her life complete and she just can't wait. She'll be the mommy and the daddy and feels she can do it all alone without a husband.

Sexy songbird Janet was secretly married for eight years to Rene Elizondo before their romance bitterly collapsed. The two never had any children. "And the breakup took a lot out of her - She just doesn't want to rush back to the altar," the insider said. "Yet she has her heart set on becoming a mother." But Janet's not planning to adopt. "She wants to conceive her own child - just not be tied down to a hubby," added the insider.

And that's what has her mom Katherine Jackson hopping mad! Katherine, a devout Jehovah's Witness, "only wants the best for Janet, but she's from the old school and believes you have to be married before you have a baby", said the insider. "Yet I can't begin to tell you how important becoming a mother is for Janet - and she' anxious to raise a child in her own way."

    Questionable lyrics off air?

In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, one radio network is recommending its stations not play "lyrically questionable" music and has issued a list of 150 songs it says should be off the air for the time being.

Clear Channel, the world's largest group of radio stations, circulated the list in its newsletter Hits Daily Double. It includes AC/DC's "Shot Down in Flames" as well as mellower songs such as Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door". Dave Matthews Band's "Crash Into Me" and the 1977 Kansas hit "Dust in the Wind" also made the list. Clear Channel represents about 1,200 stations and broadcasts in 47 of the top 50 U.S. markets. One out of every 10 radio stations across the United States broadcasts under the Clear Channel banner.

A representative from Clear Channel confirmed that the list was circulated. The company maintains that none of the "questionable" songs are banned.

Interactive effort to clean up mess

    By Ruwanthi Herat Gunaratne
Any typical Sri Lankan if asked 'So what about cleaning up your environment?' would most likely reply - 'That's the CMC's job'. But not the Rotaract Club of Wellawatte, who together with the Interact District 3220 launched a 'Clean Up the World' campaign last Sunday.

"Every year, the 'Clean Up the World' campaign held in conjuction with the United Nations Environmental Programme mobilises millions of volunteers in more than 120 countries around the globe to undertake a wide range of environmental issues," said Chamila Fernando of the Rotaract Club of Wellawatte. "We are the first organization to take over this project for Sri Lanka," she said.

Throughout the morning over 40 Interactors and Rotaractors, braving the rains worked their way down Galle Road starting at Ramakrishna Road upto Savoy Theatre and then proceeded to clean up Kinross Beach (Wellawatte).

The organisers hope to make this an annual event, and say they were heartened by the response they received. "We just mentioned that we were holding a project of this sort and all these Interactors volunteered readily - it was fantastic. It's nice to know people really do care."

Among the Interact clubs that were represented were St. Joseph's College, Hindu College, Ananda College, Prince of Wales and Carey College. "We decided to volunteer for this project because we believe that it is high time that we started taking responsibility for our actions," said the Interactors from Carey College.

"And seeing the beach go from disgustingly dirty to sparkling clean has given us all a lovely feeling inside."
