While introducing the first batch of glass water bottles in the local market, ‘Sprout’ a natural spring water supplier aims to phase out its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) water bottles by 2024.

From its natural pure form, the spring water undergoes basic purification and it’s only being distributed to exclusive hotels and supermarket chains in the country.

The company is also targeting to export these glass water bottles to the UAE, West Asia and the Maldives, to a high end clientele, says Reza Odayar, Managing Director of Sprout Natural Spring Water, speaking to the Business Times on the sidelines of the launch of the glass water bottles at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo last week.

He said, “Sprout has been in the industry for the past 27 years and we have been using PET water bottles for distribution. This is the first time we have moved into glass water bottles while aiming to phase out PET bottles completely by 2024. Our water bottles are available at exclusive hotels, restaurants and supermarkets in Sri Lanka. Spring water in its pure form undergoes basic purification and no chemical or physical alteration is done as the factory is located in a remote area in the foothills of the knuckles mountain range.”

He also stressed that the factory was operating in a remote village for 23 years without direct power supply from the national grid. “The factory was functioning with a generator for 23 years and only five years ago we received direct power supply from the national grid. The villagers around the area are benefited from the factory and around 35 people are employed currently,” he noted.

Sprout Water’s bottling plant is in a private estate in the Falcon Valley in Medamahanuwara, which is on the southern tip of the Knuckles Mountain Range. It is the facility most closely located to the Knuckles Rainforest and furthest away from any other human activity, ensuring an unadulterated flow from the natural spring.  The water only undergoes a filtering process before bottling to ensure its natural goodness remains intact. The water is also not subjected to reverse osmosis which removes the natural minerals that are beneficial to one’s health.
