A minor fire broke out yesterday at a building at Royal College, Colombo.

Police said the fire had started on the 2nd floor of a building in the school premises. The room where it started had housed equipment used by Boy Scouts.

The Colombo Fire Brigade said it received reports of a fire at the school at about 11.40 p.m. and had deployed four fire trucks immediately to the location. Firefighters managed to douse the fire within about 20 minutes, they said.

The fire has caused some damage but its extent is yet to be assessed. Officials from the Government Analyst’s Department had visited the scene yesterday to conduct investigations and police are awaiting their report on the cause of the fire.

However initial inspections revealed that an electrical short-circuit was suspected to be the cause of the fire
