A collection of short plays produced by award winning playwright Sachithra Rahubedda ‘Hithata Wetunu Misaila’will go on the boards at 3.30 pm and 7 pm at the Lionel Wendt theatre on September 18.

Depicting different social and political issues in Sri Lanka, the collection of dramas are a social critique and an analysis.

The three plays ‘Rathmal Yahanaka Sathapi’,’Kepanam’and ‘Uthpalawarna’, all award winners and nominated will join the maiden performance of Sachithra’s newest short plat ‘Demalanam’ at the festival.

‘Rathmal Yahanaka Sathapi’won the Best Short Play production, the Best Direction, the Best Script, the Best Music Direction, the Best Lighting and the Best Actor at the State Drama Festival in 2021 while ‘Kepanam’ has won the Best Production, the Best Direction, the Best Script, the Best Music, the Best Make up,  the Best Stage Setting, the Best Choreography, the Best Stage Management, the Best Actor and the Best Assistant Actor at the Youth Drama Festival. ‘Uththpalawarna was selected for the final round of the State Short Drama Festival 2021.

Started theatre direction with children dramas, Sachithra’s dramas have participated at the State Children drama Festival and the State Youth Drama Festival more than five years.

Started to produce short plays in 2015, Sachithra found the power of genre of play though they are limited in time.

‘I love the genre of short dramas. In the world, there are no differences between short or long plays. This is actually unique phenomenon in Sri Lanka. Over the years the short drama has been developed and become an independent form of art. Like a short story that is different from the novel, short play has been developed to an independent major art’ Sachithra said describing about short plays in Sri Lanka.

‘While providing the entertainment, within a short period of time we could analyses major issue and situation through short dramas’ he added.

With the aim to take Sri Lankan theatre to the international, Sachithra has now formed Red Apple International Theater Gathering with the participation of 20 countries. Started in 2009, the organization has over 3600 members around the world.
