Scramble to secure Rs 60 eggs deal

Eggs will be sold to Sri Lankans at between Rs 50 and Rs 60 each, following an understanding between the poultry industry and authorities, the Sunday Times has learnt.

Minister of Trade Nalin Fernando met with the All Ceylon Egg Producers Association and the All Island Poultry Farmers Association to settle on the price range.

This is despite a Gazette notice stating white eggs should be sold at Rs 43 and brown eggs at Rs 45. Mr Fernando said the notice will not be withdrawn.

On August 19, the consumer watchdog set the maximum retail price for a white egg at Rs 43 and Rs 45 for a brown/red egg. The industry objected citing rising feed and nutrition costs.

The Consumer Affairs Authority said that by Friday, 64 suspects were produced in court for selling eggs above the maximum retail price. CAA chairman Shanta Niriella, said the maximum retail price is based on surveys.

The All Island Poultry Farmers Association said with production cost at Rs 49, an egg cannot be sold at Rs 50.

A price between Rs 50 and Rs 60 was made by them to the minister, so that retailers can sell remaining stocks.
