The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has acquired a Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft from India to enhance its maritime surveillance capabilities.

The Dornier will be inducted to the SLAF fleet on August 15 in a ceremony to be attended by President Ranil Wickramasinghe and India’s High Commissioner Gopal Baglay.

During the Defence Dialogue between India and Sri Lanka on January 9, 2018 in New Delhi, Sri Lanka sought the possibility of obtaining two Dornier reconnaissance aircraft from India.

The Indian Navy agreed to gift another Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft on gratis for two years — the period required to manufacture a new aircraft.

India expressed its willingness to gift another Dornier 228 Aircraft to the Sri Lanka Air Force following an agreement between the two countries.

The aircraft will be flown and maintained by 15 SLAF personnel who underwent special training in India for four months. They included pilots, observers, engineers and technicians.

The SLAF intends to employ the Dornier aircraft in conducting maritime and coastal surveillance operations, search-and-rescue, casualty evacuation and maritime pollution monitoring and controlling.
