A United Nations humanitarian appeal launched in June for US$ 47.2mn (Rs 17bn) of aid for Sri Lanka has raised US$ 10.7mn (Rs 3.8bn) up to this week, according to the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka.

Separately, an appeal by the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF has generated US$ 5.9mn (Rs 2.1bn) to address the immediate needs of children. The World Food Programme has raised the most, with US$21mn (Rs 7.5bn) to address food security, the Office said, in response to questions from the Sunday Times.

The US$ 47.2mn Humanitarian Needs and Priorities (HNP) plan is aimed at finding money required to implement responses to provide life-saving assistance to the most affected and vulnerable populations.

UN agencies in Sri Lanka are working to provide lifesaving assistance to 1.7 million people in need, particularly focusing on health care and essential medicines, food and agriculture—including targeted nutrition services— safe drinking water, emergency livelihoods and protection, the Office said.

In June, announcing the HNP plan, UN Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy warned that, “Livelihoods are under threat; if we do not act quickly, many more people will not be able to meet their basic needs.”

“The UN and humanitarian partners are calling on donors to urgently come forward and support this plan to provide lifesaving assistance to the women, men, and children most affected by the crisis and thus prevent a deterioration of humanitarian needs in the country,” she said.

She added: “I am particularly concerned by an unfolding multidimensional food security crisis in which many families are unable to afford basic food commodities. Surveys indicate that up to 70 percent of households have had to reduce food consumption, including by skipping meals, as food prices have reportedly increased by 73 percent in the last two years.”
