The Medical Research Institute’s (MRI’s) Virology Department has received RT-PCR kits for the detection of monkeypox.

So far, no monkeypox cases have been found in Sri Lanka. The World Health Organisation (WHO) on July 23 declared monkeypox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). Following a spike in cases, the United States, meanwhile, this week dubbed the monkeypox outbreak in that country, a public health emergency.

“We (MRI) prepared the reagents on Thursday for the RT-PCR kits we received this week,” said Consultant Virologist Dr. Jude Jayamaha, adding that he and colleague Consultant Virologist Dr. Janaki Abeynayake took the MRI’s Medical Laboratory Technologists through the paces on the processes.

The two types of RT-PCR (real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction) kits have been developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Institute of Virology in Pune, India.
