French is back in the University of Peradeniya’s curriculum, a university official said recently.

A number of freshers were distraught when they found out that French was no longer a first year subject. Their objective had been to learn French for their degree. “Dead” languages such as Greek and Latin were on the subject lists, but not French.

The students claimed they had to switch to other subjects in the Faculty of Arts and the subject they were interested in was not taught at the university in the first year—only in the final years.

Dr. Prabath Ekanayake, the Dean of the Faculty, said the French Lecturer had retired and they could not obtain the services of a competent French lecturer.

However, he said the services of a visiting lecturer had been obtained and they could now continue teaching the subject.
