Swiatek stopped at 38th in Wimbledon 2022

In Wimbledon 2022, Iga Swiatek won her 37th unbroken win. It happens to be the longest winning streak of this century. Serena Williams went just past 30s twice in this century. Swiatek’s 38th encounter resulted in a loss to Alize Cornet of France in the third round of the 2022 Wimbledon. Swiatek admitted that she was confused with tactics, disturbed with shot selection that got her into stroke making errors.

Not finding the best playing form to win can happen to the best of players even after planned preparation. An inherent nature of sport. Best of exponents and beginners can experience this. Good playing form is fine-tuning. Subjected to controllable and uncontrollable variants. Record shows that it is impossible to get it right and win 100 matches without a loss. Best to my memory is 62-win run. In the WTA ranking, Swiatek will remain No.1 player. WTA is not issuing ranking points to this year’s Wimbledon. Banning of the Russian players from the event not accepted by the professional bodies.

Cornet and Garcia

Alize Cornet of France, who beat Swiatek, is 32-years-old and has been in the WTA circuit since 2006. She lost to Australian Tomljanovic having won the first set, Cornet could not sustain the intensity required to wrap up the match.

The other French featured prominently in this Wimbledon was Caroline Garcia. The strappings on both her thighs told her history. Considering her to be in recuperation, her efforts were commendable in reaching the last 16. She was in the Top 10 of the WTA ranking few years back.

Ons Jabeur

Currently Ons Jabeur of Tunisia is ranked second in the WTA raking after Iga Swiatek. With Swiateks elimination, Jabeur winning the Wimbledon title is a strong possibility. If it happens, she will be the first to do so from the African continent. As of Wednesday, June 6, she is on course to win.

As a girl from Tunisia, Jabeur, by a slim chance, took to tennis and by even slimmer chance managed to remain in the game. The resilience she exhibited against all odds will go down the memory lane. As I write this, she is still there in the semi-final of 2022 Wimbledon.

Krygios’s fluency and capacity

Fluency of Krygios’s reflexive stroke making and the capacity in shot selection does not permit him to be consistent to win always. When all falls in place, it is a treat to watch him. Very rarely, he finishes an event without a fine. In sports spectatorship, this has become an attraction. As of second week in Wimbledon 2022, his fines stand at US$ 10,000.

Krygios’ when in full force exhibits out of the ordinary array in shot selection and it is a brand of its own. Almost never is he in the match from beginning to end. He is an in-and-out match man. In grilling the umpire, he is on par with the best known in the game. He can win a set that he should not have won and lose a set that he should not have lost. An attraction! Fire branding reminder of McEnroe, Nastase and sometimes Noah.

Men’s tennis in Wimbledon 2022 did miss Russians Rublev, Medvedev and Khachaznov. Medvedev is No.1 in the current ATP ranking. The No.2, German Zevrev, had a serious injury in the French Open. These took away top two players from the draw. The four men’s semi-finalist are, Cameron Norrie of Britain, Djokovic, Kyrgious and Nadal. Nadal beat Taylor Fritz in a marathon quarter-final match. Fritz’s mother as Kathy May of the USA reached quarter-finals of Wimbledon thrice in the late 1970s.

Sanya Mirza

Indian Sanya Mirza is 35-years-old. She has announced that this will be her last Wimbledon. She, with Mate Pavic, have reached the semi-final of Wimbledon mixed doubles. She began here professional career in 2003 and retired in 2013. Of recent, she has been playing doubles and mixed doubles in major events.

A smart advantage in tennis

The ‘service’ has the reputation of being the most rewarding single weapon in tennis. Good exponents of the game put the independence it provides to maximum use. Along with this, there is another often not noticed. Server in tennis will always have two shots for every three shots played in a rally. In fact, this plays a bigger part in the first five shots of the rally.

In the tactical training sessions, this requires special attention. Especially for players without strong service ability. Some players have won the Wimbledon title without a good serve. Marion Bartoli of France just few years back, bagged the grass court title focusing on the server’s advantage of having an extra shot. Smart, in fact she was very smart.
