Bethel Chapel: A ‘Century of Blessings’

Seemingly hidden away amidst towering office buildings and apartment blocks, Bethel Chapel, at 7 Alfred House Gardens, celebrates a ‘Century of Blessings’ on July 7. Over the past 100 years, through the many changing scenes of life, it has been a place of solace where weary souls come heavy laden and cast their burdens at the feet of Jesus Christ.
Bethel Chapel was the first Seventh-day Adventist Church and at its founding there were seven charter members. It is from these humble beginnings, just like the parable of the mustard seed that it grew into a large ‘tree’, providing shade and shelter for many and serving the wider community. For years Bethel Chapel has provided a calm assurance to patients who found themselves at St Michael’s Nursing Home, which used to be located opposite the church.
The original building stood for 38 years and was replaced by the edifice that stands today dedicated in December 1970. The architect W.E. Classen, a member of the church, spent many prayerful hours designing the church so it should come as no surprise that the acoustics were one of the best in Colombo. Lylie Godridge with his LG Quarter sang at the dedication of the new church.
The Centenary Service of Praise will be held on July 8 at 6.45 p.m. and the Service of Thanksgiving on July 9 at 11 a.m. All are welcome.
