The national selectors have pruned down the 21-man squad named for the five-match ODI series against Australia to 18 with spinners Ramesh Mendis, Praveen Jayawickrama and all-rounder Lahiru Madushanka losing out their places. The two spinners—key players in Test cricket have been asked to prepare for the two-match Test series and will join a handful of Test only cricketers training at Kettarama training centre.

All three including Madushanka will remain as standbys. The team captained by Dasun Shanaka sees the inclusion of highly-rated Sri Lanka’s Under-19 captain Dunith Wellalage and the uncapped right-arm seamer Pramod Madushan.

Danushka Gunathilaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Niroshan Dickwella and Wanindu Hasaranga have all returned to the side. Sri Lanka have beaten South Africa and Zimbabwe in identical margins of 2-1 in their last two home series.
