Ananda thrash Sebs at Moratuwa
View(s):Ananda College recorded a convincing 7-wicket win against St. Sebastian’s College, in their Under-19 School Cricket encounter which ended at Moratuwa yesterday.
The visitors, who were put into bat, gained the upper hand from the start, despite making 202 for their first innings. That was when they skittled out the hosts for just 82 runs, gaining an advantage of 120 runs and forcing a follow on.
St. Sebastian’s were bowled out for a second time for 198 runs, after the heroics by left-arm spinner Shakthi Udara, who claimed a seven wicket haul. Ananda were left with a target of 81 runs, which they achieved within 16 overs and after losing three of their top batsmen in the process. The only half century of the game came from Anandian Nethma Karunaratne, who stroked 77 in their first innings.
The match between S. Thomas’ College and Thurstan College played at Mt. Lavinia, ended in a thrilling draw, despite the home team holding the edge towards victory. On a track that favoured bowlers, the Thomians elected to bat, and declared at 182-9 and returned to bowl out Thurstan for 90, with speedster Gunaratnam Caniston claiming a five-fer.
The hosts tumbled in their second essay, but made a sporty declaration upon reaching 96-8, leaving Thurstan the challenge of chasing a target of 189 runs in 20 overs. Thurstan lost five wickets, yet managed to hold on till the end of play.
