PM to appoint high-powered committee to stabilise economy

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is to appoint a high-powered Economic Stabilisation Committee headed by former Treasury Secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga to advise him on stabilising the economy.

The committee will include Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Treasury Secretary Mahinda Siriwardene, Dr. Sharmini Cooray former Capacity Development director of the IMF Institute, former CB Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy and Shantha Daniel.

Other members of the committee are Deshal De Mel, formerly Verite Research’s Research Director who also served as an advisor to the Ministry of Finance during the 2017-2019 period; Dr. Sarath Rajapathirana, former Economic Advisor to the World Bank and Advocata Academic Advisor; Dinesh Weerakkody, former chairman of HNB and a senior company director; Anushka Wijesinha,  former Chief Economist, Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) economist; Daniel Alfonso, a former Economic Advisor to Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera in 2019; and Ms. Dishni Weerakoon, Director, IPS.

Three more members from the private sector are to be co-opted to this committee, the Sunday Times learns.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe is also the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies.

While the committee will work under the ambit of the Finance and Economic Stabilisation Ministry to work out an immediate action plan to stabilise the economy, the National Policies Ministry will be entrusted to work with the line ministries and stakeholders to map out a long-term national programme for a common economic system for the country.
