Amidst acute fuel shortage, India has come forward to donate some 15,000 litres of kerosene to island-based fishermen in the north, following a request from fisher federations.

As part of India’s outreach to the Northern Province people under its ‘Akshayapatra’ humanitarian assistance programme, fisher federations based in the northern islands of Analaithivu and Eluvaithivu  will receive the Indian grant. Each fisherman will receive 20 litres of kerosene.

Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda and India’s Jaffna-based Consul General Raakesh Natraj began the distribution process to fishermen yesterday at the Kayts Divisional Secretariat.

The Indian assistance came after Jaffna Fishermen Federation Union requested India via the consulate to assist them with kerosene as the livelihood of many fishermen was severely affected in recent weeks due to the fuel shortage and recent fuel price hike.

Earlier this week, in the Mullaithivu district, rice and milk power were distributed among pregnant women and the low income families under the Indian humanitarian programme.

The aid, part of the Tamil Nadu government’s assistance to the people of Sri Lanka, comprised 40,000MT  of rice and 500MT of milk powder. The programme will continue in the coming days, India’s Consulate General office in Jaffna said.
