Surrey was off to a solid start courtesy to an opening wicket century stand and finishing the day on “196 for no loss” at the end of day-02 against the Sri Lankan Emerging in their four-day match at Guildford, yesterday.

When it came to Surrey’s turn, in a tit-for-tat for Nipun Dananjaya’s 150, it was Ryan Patel’s 109. He countered with with a brisk and an unfinished innings. Patel accelerated his innings and had hit four sixes and ten fours on the stroke of stumps. Soon, his partner Ben Geddes also joined the run scoring. He too, caught up notching up a 75, also containing a maximum.

In what seems to be a batting wicket, the duo were untroubled by the
Sri Lankan bowlers, and were settling in well.

During the process, they were also making merry of the attack.

They were behind the Sri Lankans by 212.

Lankans resuming on 230 for six, and their skipper Dananjaya continuing from 81, went unstoppable. He led a captain’s knock, including featuring in a 97-run stand along with the U-19 captain Dunith Wellalage, unluckily missing out on 46, hence yet to score his first 50 in the tour.

Dananjaya in his 232-ball stay, cracked eleven boundaries, starred in partnerships, and revived his team when they were tottering at four for 115.

The former St. Joseph Vaz Wennapuwa player, also stood till the end in ensuring the visitors posted a commanding total. As he progressed in his innings, contributions flowed in late from the order too.

Though there were failures in between, these three batters ensured they were on course for commanding score.

Avishka Tharindu, also unlucky to miss out on a fifty by two-runs, however, helped his captain to elevate the team’s score by sharing 82 for the sixth-wicket.

Tom Lawes and Amar Virdi each took three-wickets apiece.
