A post-mortem report has revealed that Polonnaruwa District Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala died of multiple injuries sustained in a mob attack.

Mr Athukorala and his security officer were killed in Nittambuwa during the unrest that broke out on May 9 after pro-government goons attacked peaceful protesters outside Temple Trees and at the Galle Face Green.

The post-mortem examination conducted by Dr Ramesh Alagiyawanna, the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Wathupitiwala Hospital, revealed that the multiple injuries included fractures and internal bleeding.

Also killed with the MP was his security officer, Police Sergeant Ahangama Vithanage Jayantha Gunawardena. The post-mortem examination on his remains revealed that he had died due to a gunshot wound to the chest. The bullet had exited the body after puncturing his lung. The sergeant had also been severely assaulted and had fractures to his skull. He had also suffered brain haemorrhage.

The post-mortem inquiry negated earlier reports that one or both of the victims had taken their own lives after being surrounded by a mob.

Video footage shared in the social media showed the late MP’s vehicle being surrounded by a mob in Nittambuwa town on May 9. Shots were also fired during the incident after the vehicle was surrounded. A 27-year-old youth who sustained gunshot injuries during the incident later died in hospital.

In the video footage, the MP and his security officer with a pistol in his hand, running away from the scene after the shots were fired. Their bodies were later found inside a popular clothing store in the Nittambuwa town.

Nittambuwa Police are conducting investigations.

Meanwhile, in a Tweet last night, former Minister Namal Rajapaksa said, “The death of Hon. Amarakeerthi Athukorale was initially reported as a suicide, now however the medical examinations have proved otherwise. This begs the questions on what basis was it portrayed as a suicide? & who informed the media that it was a suicide?”
