Monash University Australia celebrates its achievement of recoding the strongest ever performance by surging seven places to rank 57th globally and earn a place in the Australian Top 4 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022.

The Times Higher Education (THE) provides trusted performance data on universities, and their rankings cover three major areas on university activities which include research, impact and teaching. It consists of the list of the world’s best universities and is the only global league table that judges research intensive universities across their core missions. The World University Rankings measures universities based on 13 performance indicators across five broad categories inclusive of teaching, research, citations (research influence), international outlook and industry income. The 2022 rankings consider almost 1,600 universities across almost 100 countries which represents the largest and diverse university rankings up-to date.

Monash University celebrated an increase across four of the five broad assessment categories, led by particularly strong results in the industry income criteria (rising 5.3 points), according to the rankings released today. The other increases were in teaching (up 1.4 points overall), citations (up 1.5 points) and international outlook (up 0.7 points). The score for the broad research metric remained the same, however in the sub-category research income the University gained 2.9 points.

Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner said Monash’s position in the 2022 THE World University Rankings was a clear indication of the University’s ongoing commitment to excellence, particularly during what has been a challenging period for the university sector. “This result is testament to the dedication and hard work of our academic community,” Professor Gardner said. “Monash continues to cement itself as one of the World’s Top 100 Universities; to advance seven places to 57th globally during the  COVID-19 pandemic is no small feat. Prof. Gardener added “Our research is strengthened through global collaboration with industry and government. In the past five years, we have had a significant focus on collaboration and developed a number of initiatives to scale enterprising partnerships so as to diversify income and increase impact across the public and private sectors. Our improved score in industry income criteria demonstrates the success of these strengthened relationships.”
