Rain ensure tame draws

With rain hampering majority of proceedings, two traditional Inter-School two-day cricket games ended in tame draws, while Sri Devananda took the upper hand at stumps on the first day against Devapathiraja Rathgama in their game began yesterday.

St. Joseph’s travelled to Reid Avenue to take on Royal, who earned honours of their drawn game with the only three half centuries coming from the hosting side’s Uvindu Weerasekara, Dasis Manchanayake and Sineth Jayawardena, while Shenuk Serasinghe claimed a five-for for the visitors. Despite posting a low total after electing to bat, the Josephians had the guts to declare their innings at 131-8 while in reply Royal were 240-7 when the game ended.

At Karandeniya, hosts Karandeniya Central took the upper hand in their drawn encounter against minnows All Saints, Galle, as Tharindu Ameesha ended with a match bag of seven wickets in addition to his half century for the visitors. Electing to bat, Karandeniya Central were bowled out by their opponents on both occasions — for 241 and 150, with Savindu Umesh being the only batsman to score a half century from both innings. All Saints were bowled out at exactly 100, with Ameesha top scored with 50.

Devapathiraja elected to bat against Sri Devananda at Ambalangoda, only to be bowled out for 170, despite a fighting knocks from Pawan Sandesh (68) and Tharindu Rukshan (42n.o.). Sri Devananda were strongly poised at 146-3 with Kanchana de Livera remaining unbeaten on 66 when stumps were drawn on the first day.
