Infection in schools: Vaccinate your child if eligible for the jab

Regarding the spread of the infection in schools, Dr. Asela Gunawardena said that this may be due to a two-way process.

One reason could be that adults who go out to work or to do other stuff are taking the virus back home. The other possibility is that a child could get infected from a peer in school and bring it back home, he said.

Yes, children under 12 are not vaccinated but what we must remember is that vaccination does not prevent a person from getting Omicron. It only prevents severe disease and death. It may also be difficult to ensure that children resort to preventive measures, he said.

He added: “UNICEF is saying that schools are safer for children than homes. Schools should be the last to close and first to open. Even in the United Kingdom, despite having between 80,000-100,000 positive cases a day, the schools open.

“Parents should not be worried about giving the vaccine to the eligible group – children in the 12-15 age-group. It is voluntary not only for children but also for adults and we seek the consent of parents before giving the jab. What needs to be remembered is that if you vaccinate your child, you will give protection not only to him/her but also other children he/she interacts with. There has been no severe adverse reaction after vaccination, only the usual arm/body pain and fever. We are monitoring this very closely.

“On the other hand, the risk of getting COVID-19 and suffering severe disease and even dying increases in children with co-morbidities. So vaccinate your child if she/he is eligible for the jab.”
