The Government has decided to provide a monthly allowance of Rs. 5000 to employees of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) such as corporations and statutory boards.

Through a circular, Treasury Secretary S.R. Attygalle this week informed government institutions about the allowance which is effective from this month.

The allowance will be determined by an SOE’s board of directors, taking into consideration the following criteria: Officers on no-pay leave are not entitled to this allowance. The officers on leave with half pay shall be paid fifty percent of the allowance during that time period.

The allowance should be paid to the employees with daily pay if they have reported for duty on all days that they were required to report or otherwise the allowance should be paid having calculated the amount in proportion to the number of days they have reported for duty.
