Dry days and chilly mornings to continue

Fairly cold nights and mornings are expected over most parts of the island during the next few days, the weather forecaster has predicted.

In the past 24 hours, Kurunegala recorded a temperature of 33.7 degrees Celsius, while in Nuwara Eliya, it was 8.3°C, data show.

Met Department duty meteorologist Malith Fernando attributed the heat to higher temperatures and lower humidity. He cited low winds and fewer clouds for the dip in temperatures in some areas.

According to the forecaster, mainly dry weather will prevail over most parts of the country.

In the Nuwara Eliya District, ground frost is likely in some places in the early hours of the morning.

Misty conditions can be expected in some places in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-Central and Uva provinces, and in the Galle and Matara districts during the morning.

Dr Inoka Suraweera, consultant community physician, Environmental and Occupational Health Directorate of the Ministry of Health, said precautions should be taken by those with chronic diseases, the seniors, and children.

“Overexposure to the sun might lead to complications for certain people and it is good for everyone to stay away from the sun,” she said. She suggested wearing light clothing. “The reason for this phenomenon is the prevailing climate changes that have affected the entire world.’’

Drink at least two litres of water every day, she advised. Stay away from the sun between 11:00am and 2:30pm.

Those suffering from non-communicable diseases should continue with their medications. Anyone feeling sick or feeling dizzy must take a rest.

The Department of Irrigation said there is enough water for the ongoing ‘Maha’ season cultivation, despite the drought.

D. Abeysiriwardena of the irrigation management division said sufficient water would be released for agriculture.
