Agriculture authorities set the rules

Agriculture authorities have stated that the rules for a new Chinese organic fertiliser shipment will still apply and that they should supply in line with the Sri Lankan requirements subjected to tests at local laboratories.

While there has been no communication from the Chinese fertiliser company Qingdao Seawin Biotech Company, the Agriculture Department Director General Dr. Ajantha De Silva said the payment (for the failed shipment) has gone through and if Sri Lanka is to purchase from this company then “they should supply the Sri Lankan requirement”.

He noted that definitely the fertiliser will be subject to a sample check before the consignment of fertiliser is sent and that they will not rely on any outside parties testing these samples.

In this respect the National Plant Quarantine Services (NPQS) will be asked to check on the sample, the DG explained.

With the authorities readying for the Yala season even the National Fertiliser Secretariat (NFS) has not been informed of any samples that would be sent from the Qingdao company.

Officials at the NFS stated that they were not informed of this company resending any samples, but that tenders have been advertised for the procurement of organic fertiliser both locally and internationally. The Yala season is from May to August when more than 500,000 H are expected to be cultivated with plans underway to provide farmers with a bio liquid and compost mix to be used as a base in addition to providing them with a booster fertiliser with about 10 per cent Nitrogen.

The international tenders will be mainly to procure Potassium Chloride, officials said adding that they were not sure of how much Nano Nitrogen is currently available.

Dr. De Silva pointed out that based on data obtained from the field they expect a reduction in yields for this Maha season of about 25-30 per cent from the average potential yields.
