Jolly Boys win Matale District Football title
Champions - Jolly Boys SC
Led by K. Udaya Kumar, Jolly Boys SC Matale posted a thrilling 1-0 win over Matale Youth SC in the final of Matale District Inter-Club Football Championship 2021 concluded at the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium on Wednesday. The closely contested game saw the two sides deadlocked without scoreless at the short whistle. The second half too was keenly contested before Jolly Boys succeeded in breaking the deadlock 10 minutes before the long whistle through P. Saranraj, who claimed the winning goal to seal a 1-0 victory for his side.
M. Riswan of Jolly Boys was named as the best player of the final while the award for the best goalkeeper went to A.M. Ijaas of Matale Youth SC. The match was refereed by Rohitha Hettiarachchi.
The tournament was organised and conducted by Matale Football League under the guidance and supervision of its long standing secretary (1996-2021) and live-wire of Matale Football League, U.L.M. Lateeb, a former national player who has been instrumental in uplifting the standard of the sport in Matale in recent years.
Twelve Division ‘A’ teams affiliated to Matale FL participated and each team received sports material including two footballs from the president of Matale FL K.R.M. Harris under their football promotion programme. The President of the FFSL, Jaswar Umar graced the presentation ceremony as the chief guest while Gunter Helm, a past president of Matale Rotary Club was the Guest of Honour.
