The Colombo Coroners’ Court reported an incident of a 17-year-old girl being locked in a house by a PHI following the deaths of her 70-year-old mother and her 90-year-old uncle.

The incident took place following the deaths of her uncle and mother at their house at Jampettah Street, Colombo 13, as they were infected with Covid-19 and had not received treatment.

The postmortem conducted by Judicial Medical Officer, K K Rahul Haq confirmed that the mother had died due to Covid-19.

After it was confirmed that both deaths were caused due to Covid -19, the area PHI had visited the house and posted a notice on the door of the house and locked the girl within the house and taken the key with him.

The boyfriend of the girl, Mohamad Farook, complained to the Courts that the girl was trapped within the house for two days as the PHI had locked her inside. He elaborated that the girl had not had a meal for two days and was staying in a house which had no electricity and water. After learning that, Sudden Death Inquirer Irisha Deshani Samaraweera and Borella Police Sergeant visited the house and talked with the girl who was trapped inside the house.

Thereafter, she had sent the girl to quarantine at her school friends’ house. The PHI had not returned to the house afterwards.

The Police have also learned that after the death of the girl’s mother, the people who were staying at the house on rent had taken over the house and disconnected the water and electricity connection.

Ms Samaraweera elaborated that if the boyfriend of the girl did not appear before the Coroner’s Court, the girl might have died of starvation and dehydration. She said that the action of the PHI was appalling as the girl had suffered physically and mentally, adding that such PHIs should be subjected to punishment by law.
