The Moratuwa District Court has issued an interim injunction preventing Dr Anuruddha Padeniya from being appointed as President of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) uncontested for the 2021/2022 period.

The interim order prevents the GMOA’s Election Committee chairman from installing Dr Padeniya as the President for 2021/2022.

The order by District Judge Daminda R. Weligodapitiya has prevented Dr Padeniya from referring to himself as the GMOA’s President or functioning in that role for the 2021/2022 term unless he has been elected through due process after nominations are called.

The Judge has further ordered that steps be taken to call for fresh nominations to elect office bearers to the GMOA for the 2021/2022 period following due process.

The interim order was issued following a case filed by Medical Research Institute (MRI) Deputy Director Dr Jayaruwan Bandara who alleges that his nomination papers to contest for the post of GMOA President for 2021/2022 were rejected by the GMOA’s Election Committee on fraudulent grounds.

Upul Jayasuriya, PC with Iranga Perera, Sachithra Andrahennadi instructed by Sampath Wijewardena appeared for Mr Bandara.
